| Clothes are an important part of modern life. It’s hard to imagine how people can live without clothes. There are various styles of clothes nowadays, so people can choose what to wear on different occasions. As for me, I have a good collection of clothes in my wardrobe. There are a couple of school suits which are of classic style. Then I have some jeans and T-shirts for casual days. And at last, I have a couple of bright dresses for parties or special occasions. Most of all I like wearing ordinary jeans with matching shirts. I think it’s not only convenient but also stylish. As for shoes, I prefer wearing sports shoes or sneakers but I need to wear some classic black shoes to school. I don’t like high heels because they are uncomfortable. I always try to keep my clothes and shoes neat. I think that clothes tell a lot about people and can make a strong impression. So if they are tidy and nice the impression will be positive. The choice of clothes also depends on seasons and weather conditions. In winter, for example, it’s important to have a warm coat and a pair of boots. A jacket and rubber boots would be nice for spring and autumn. Fashion has always had a huge influence on people around the world. The main reason why we try to follow the latest fashion trends is a desire to look stylish, attractive, popular and more confident. Generally people judge a new person by his appearance and his clothes and only then, by his inner qualities. There is a proverb: “Good clothes open all doors.” That’s why we do our best to make a favourable impression on others. We spend a lot of money to keep up with fashion and buy designer clothes.
Fashion often means style, glamour and success. It is also a big business. It’s hard to resist the temptation to buy some brand-name clothing in our modern world. Every day we pass by colourful shop-windows, we see plenty of ads everywhere: on buses, billboards, TV and in magazines. Many teenagers pay too much attention to their friends’ and classmates’ appearance. Sadly, if some parents are not able to afford buying trendy clothes with fashion labels, their kids often become outsiders. So clothes usually separate people into social groups.
In my opinion every person can have his own style and look unique. He should choose clothes according to his taste, age, job, constitution and character. I am glad to say that I don’t pay so much attention to fashion and I am not its victim. I don’t care too much about what other people wear. The most important thing for me in the outlook is neatness, natural look and beauty. And it should certainly suit the occasion. I must admit that some fashionable clothes are quite ridiculous and unpractical. There was a time, for instance, when young people wore baggy clothes, shoes on enormous platforms, red hair, black fingernails and bright make-up. To my mind, it was just a silly waste of money. Besides, if a person doesn’t have a good taste he is not able to put things together and look attractive and stylish even in fashionable clothes.
Fashion is a contradictory phenomenon that attracts millions of people today. Nowadays, both men and women think about fashion and want to be up-to-date. It is interesting to see how influential fashion can be. It has entered many spheres of our lives without notice.
We now tend to judge people by their clothes, haircuts, make-up, etc. And many people really think that your outward can tell them everything about your personality and social status. However, it is a mistaken opinion that makes people think narrowly.
Nevertheless, fashion is a part of our life and we have to deal with it anyway. You always have choice, so it is not obligatory to follow the crowd if you don’t want to. However, you should understand that fashion may be useful because it always means development.
Everyone knows we should all develop both mentally and physically. In this way, fashion doesn’t include only clothes trends. It may also talk about modern books, places, museums and hobbies. And even if you are not supposed to choose every thing that is called fashionable, you may find at least something that can interest you and become a part of your life.
All in all, fashion is not always bad or does not give you unuseful pieces of advice. It can influence you in a good way and open you the world from a new side that can be attractive.

Choosing what to wear
As in any other western country, British and American people wear all types of clothes. One of the most important things about clothes is that they should be comfortable and appropriate for the occasion.
Rules of etiquette
In Britain as well as in the USA, following the rules of etiquette, men usually wear suits for office work while women wear dresses or skirts. In hotels and restaurants people also tend to put on something more formal such as ties and smart dresses. Jeans and open shirts are just not allowed at times. Doctors, lawyers and business people also wear quite formal clothes.
Differences between the two countries
Speaking about the differences between the two countries it should be said that British people don’t think much about what they wear. Even at theatres, cinemas or concerts they put on what they want — from elegant suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Americans are more careful about that. They are used to wear informal or sporty clothes at home or in the garden but they prefer something nice and elegant when they go out.
The impact of weather
Taking into consideration the climate of Great Britain there are such special clothes as heavy overcoats or anoraks for cold wintry weather and raincoats for rainy weather. Materials that are used for making clothes cover every type and colour of fabric available.
Children and teenagers
As for children and teenagers, when they are at home or play with friends they usually wear something like t-shirts, jeans and sportswear. It’s very important for teenagers to have the right clothes. So, most of them love to shop for the latest fashions. However in a great number of schools children must wear a school uniform.

Fashion is something we deal with every day. Even people, who say they don"t care what they wear, choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day. That kind of clothes is a product of famous high-class designers" work, it is often very extravagant and extremely expensive. For example it is known that more sunglasses were sold in America after the movie "Men In Black." Sometimes a trend becomes world-wide. Back in the 50"s teenagers everywhere dressed like Elvis Presley. Musicians and other cultural icons as well as political and royal figures have always influenced what we are wearing. Newspapers and magazines reported on what Hillary Clinton was wearing when she was the 1st lady. The death of Princess Diana was a severe blow to the high fashion world, where her clothes were daily news.
Depending on their attitude towards clothes and fashion, people can be divided in three groups: fashion slaves, spending all their money on the latest clothes even if they don"t look good in them; fashion fans, who enjoy wearing modern clothes but not obsessed by them and people who just don"t care how they look. Personally I place myself between fashion fans and people who don"t care how they look. Although I enjoy shopping very much and like to try things on, especially when I look good in them, I don"t spend much time choosing and buying clothes. And of course I do it only when I really need something new to wear, and not in order to kill time.
My style and the range of clothes that I have are defined by the activities I engage in. Work occupies most of my time and therefore most of the clothes that I have corresponds with the dress code, registered in the policy of our company. According to the dress code, an employee is not allowed to wear certain items of clothing to work. For example, men are supposed to wear ties and business suits, and nobody is allowed to wear jeans, except on Fridays. Women"s clothes are not supposed to be skin-tight, too short and too open. All of the shirts are supposed to have collars. Clothes also can"t be too bright, the colors should correspond to the corporate colors – dark blue and white.
